The Bible says that life on earth is brief compared to the eternity that follows after death.
"…them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth. They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it." (Job 4:19-20)
"Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not." (Job 14:1-2)
"Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless man, being in honour, abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish." (Psalm 49:11-12)
"Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." (Psalm 90:3-6, 12)
"Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." (Luke 12:20-21
"Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content." (1 Timothy 6:6-8)
"Ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (James 4:14)
The world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." (1 John 2:17)
A safe journey from this life to the next, from the shadows of time into the radiance of eternity, is offered to us in the gospel.
“God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Jesus is Himself God’s last best Word to the human race. Let Him, therefore, speak the last word:
“Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26)
